Edmund was raised in Bruceton Mills, WV and remained there until 5 years after their last child was born. In 1885 he sold his farm and along with his brother, Richard, Took their families and moved west by train to Bismarck , ND. The family farmed at Stertsville, ND and later Edmund moved to Bismarck.
This family tasted the "West" frontier when the Sioux and buffalo still roamed the untamed prairies.
